Horizontally Deflecting Monochromator

installed on I04-1 Monochromatic MX Beamline at Diamond Light Source

Beamline I04.1 at Diamond Light Source is a dedicated facility for macromolecular crystallography experiments at a fixed wavelength. The beamline consists of a canted undulator geometry. IDT designed, manufactured, tested and installed a horizontally deflecting, fixed energy monochromator on I04.1.

The monochromator features an indirectly cooled first crystal. The crystal is cooled via a  copper finger immersed in a gallium bath for vibration-free cooling. The monochromator stability is further enhanced by thermally isolating the monochromator mechanics, preventing thermo-mechanical drift.

• Horizontally deflecting single crystal monochromator.
• Si(111) crystal at a fixed bragg angle of 8.402°.
• Fixed energy of 13.53keV.
• Indirect water cooling of crystal via liquid gallium bath for zero vibration transmission from cooling lines.
• Ultra High vacuum level <5×10-9 mbar.
• Ultra stable base block of natural granite with measured amplification factor of 1.0.
• Coarse & fine pitch adjustment.
• Thermally isolated crystal design.
